Ramayana: The Epic Tale of Divinity and Humanity Brought to Life on Screen

Have you ever heard of a film taking three years to make, with 600 days of continuous work even after shooting ends? You might not have, but it’s true for the most expensive film in Indian cinema history, Ramayana.

Ramayana, touted as the biggest film in Indian cinema, is set for a potential release in October 2027. This is just an estimate, and the release date might be pushed further as the work progresses. But the excitement around the film is so high that I’m sharing the six biggest updates with you now.

1. 800 Crore Budget: A New Record in Indian Cinema

You might find it hard to believe, but the budget for Ramayana exceeds 800 crore rupees, and that’s just for the first part! Yes, you read that right—the budget for the first part of this epic, which will be made in three parts, is 800 crore rupees. Typically, a film is considered a ‘superhit’ if it earns double its budget, so the team is already anticipating a minimum of 1700 crore rupees in revenue. This dream grows even larger if the film is released internationally.

The enormous budget is due to the film’s international release plans, not just limited to India. It will be showcased on a grand scale abroad, similar to how RRR attracted global attention. It’s expected that Ramayana will earn between 1000-1200 crore rupees in India and around 500-600 crore internationally.

Such a huge budget and extensive post-production (600 days) demonstrate the commitment to ensuring the film is flawless.

2. Sunny Deol as Hanuman

The second major update is about the cast. Sunny Deol has been confirmed to play Hanuman in the film. He will soon begin shooting and will be presented with international-level visual effects.

One of the main goals of the film is to make the characters look completely different from real life. Every actor’s appearance will be uniquely created through VFX, ensuring they look distinct from their usual selves. Sunny Deol’s portrayal will be particularly unique and distinctive.

3. Yash as Ravana

The third update is about Yash (famous as Rocky Bhai from KGF) being cast as Ravana. He will start shooting his part in December 2024. Though his role in the first part will be brief—only 15-20 minutes—it will hint at the second part. The main attraction in the second part will be the confrontation between Yash and Ranbir Kapoor (playing Lord Ram), with both roles being nearly equal.

Yash is not only an actor in the film but also a producer, making his portrayal of Ravana even more intriguing. It will be exciting to see the depth and energy he brings to his role.

4. First Teaser on Diwali

If you think you won’t hear anything about this film until 2027, that’s not entirely true. This Diwali, you might get to see the first announcement teaser of Ramayana. This short but significant teaser, around one and a half minutes long, will reveal the looks of Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita.

This teaser will be so impactful that audiences will eagerly await the film for the next three years. Despite the huge budget and long preparation time, the producers have kept everything under wraps with no official announcements yet. However, insider news suggests this step is aimed at transforming the history of the film industry.

5. Ranbir Kapoor’s Ten Avatars

The fifth update is about Ranbir Kapoor’s role. He will not only play Lord Ram but also portray ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. The film will showcase the timeline from Treta Yuga to Kali Yuga, incorporating the Dashavatara. This will be the film’s biggest X-factor.

Ranbir will have two main avatars—Lord Ram and Parshurama. His dual looks are expected to astonish the audience. The extensive use of VFX will make these looks unique and incredible.

6. Love and War: Ranbir Kapoor’s New Film

Although Ramayana will release in 2027, you won’t have to wait that long to see Ranbir Kapoor. Next year, he will appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new film Love and War, starting its shoot in October 2024. Several of Ranbir’s films will be released following this.

Love and War might release on Christmas 2025, and Ranbir will also be seen in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, set for a 2028 release. This one-year gap will see Ranbir working on two major projects, marking a new chapter in his career.

A film like Ramayana might rarely be seen in the history of Indian cinema. Its budget, cast, and story are so grand that it can truly be called the biggest film in Indian cinema. While the wait for Ramayana may be long, the updates assure that this film will elevate Indian cinema to new heights.
